Indian Railways has achieved 99.2% electrification of its Broad Gauge network (69,427 Route Kilometres) as of November 2025, nearing its target of 100%. Concurrently, solar power capacity has surged to 898 MW.

What is Mission 100% Electrification?

It is Indian Railways' strategic initiative to electrify its entire Broad Gauge network to reduce carbon emissions, cut fuel costs, and improve operational efficiency.

Pace: Acceleration from 1.42 km/day (2004-14) to >15 km/day (2019-2025).
Status: Only 0.8% (574 RKMs) remains to be electrified, primarily in 5 states. 25 States/UTs are already 100% electrified.

Key Features & Technologies

Cylindrical Mechanised Foundation: Used to speed up foundation work, replacing manual excavation.
Automatic Wiring Train: Enables simultaneous installation of catenary and contact wires with precise tension.
Solar Integration:
- 898 MW total capacity commissioned.
- 629 MW (70%) used directly for traction (running trains).
- 269 MW used for non-traction needs (stations, workshops).

Why it Matters (UPSC Relevance)

Economic (GS-III): Reduces crude oil import bill. Electric traction is ~70% cheaper than diesel.
Environment (GS-III): Critical for India's Net Zero by 2070 target. Reduces noise and air pollution.
Operational: Allows for heavier freight trains and faster passenger services (Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat).
