Last updated: 2 January 2026

Core Update

Ministry of Electronics & IT approved 22 proposals under the 3rd tranche of ECMS with projected investment of ₹41,863 crore, expected to create 33,791 direct jobs and significantly strengthen India's electronics component manufacturing ecosystem.

What is ECMS?

The Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) is a targeted incentive scheme to promote domestic manufacturing of electronic components and sub-assemblies that serve as crucial inputs for the electronics manufacturing sector. Unlike PLI for Large Scale Electronics (focused on finished products like smartphones), ECMS addresses the supply chain localization challenge.

Key Features

  • 3rd Tranche: 22 proposals with ₹41,863 crore investment, ₹2,58,152 crore projected production
  • Total Approvals: 46 applications across 11 states with ₹54,567 crore investment
  • Products Covered: PCBs (including HDIs), Capacitors, Connectors, Enclosures, Li-ion Cells, Camera Modules, Display Modules, Optical Transceivers, Aluminium Extrusion, Anode Material, Copper Clad Laminates
  • Geographic Spread: 8 states – Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan

Major Approved Companies

Company Product Significance
AT&S India PCBs Global PCB manufacturer
TDK India Capacitors Major global components player
Samsung Display Noida Display Modules Top global brand
Tata Electronics Enclosures Indian manufacturing leader
ATL Battery Technology Li-ion Cells Leading global Li-ion manufacturer

Why it Matters

  • Supply Chain Resilience: Reduces 100% import dependence for critical components like Aluminium Extrusions for mobile enclosures
  • Strategic Sectors: Components serve mobile, telecom, consumer electronics, strategic electronics, automotive, IT hardware
  • Employment Generation: 51,000+ direct jobs; significant multiplier in indirect employment
  • Import Substitution: PCBs, Li-ion cells, display modules currently heavily imported

UPSC Relevance

  • GS-III: Industrial Policy, Make in India, Effects of Liberalization on the Economy
  • Essay: "Component manufacturing is the foundation of electronics self-reliance"

Prelims Trap Alert

⚠️ ECMS is different from PLI for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing – ECMS focuses on components and sub-assemblies, not finished products like smartphones or laptops.

CivisPrime Tip

💡 Remember the 11 product categories (5 bare components + 3 sub-assemblies + 3 supply chain items) and 8 states covered under 3rd tranche approvals.
