KAVACH System
Indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to prevent train collisions. It adheres to Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4) standards and is a flagship project under Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Core Functionality
Prevents Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD). Automatically applies brakes if the pilot fails to do so. Prevents collisions between two trains on the same track.
Technology Standards
Certified to Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4), the highest level of safety certification globally. Uses RFID tags on tracks and radio communication (UHF) between trains and stations.
Atmanirbhar Bharat
Developed by RDSO (Research Designs and Standards Organisation) in collaboration with Indian industry. Significantly cheaper than European Train Control System (ETCS) Level-2.
Implementation Challenges
Requires installation on both locomotives (rolling stock) and trackside infrastructure. Current coverage is expanding from high-density routes (Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Howrah) to national network.
Strategic Importance
Zero Accident Mission. crucial for semi-high-speed trains like Vande Bharat (160 kmph+) where human reaction time is insufficient.
