Permanent and independent constitutional body (Article 324) ensuring free and fair elections in India.

Constitutional Provision

Article 324 vests superintendence, direction, and control of elections in ECI. Consists of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.

Powers & Functions

Determining territorial areas (Delimitation), Preparing electoral rolls, Notifying schedules, Registering parties, Granting symbols.

Independence

CEC removal same as Supreme Court Judge. Service conditions cannot be varied to their disadvantage. Charged expenditure.

Model Code of Conduct

Guidelines for parties and candidates. Operative from date of schedule announcement. Lack of statutory backing.

VVPAT usage, Electoral Bonds (scrapped), Remote Voting Machine proposal, E-EPIC.
