ByCivisPrime Team

Introduction

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of the most prestigious and challenging exams in India. For those aiming for UPSC 2026, the journey begins now. With approximately 18 months remaining, this is the perfect time to build a rock-solid foundation.

Phase 1: Foundation Building (Months 1-6)

The first six months should be dedicated to understanding the syllabus and building conceptual clarity through NCERTs.

  • History: Class 6-12 NCERTs (Old/New)
  • Geography: Class 6-12 NCERTs
  • Polity: Class 11-12 NCERTs
  • Economics: Class 9-12 NCERTs
  • Science: Class 6-10 NCERTs

Key Tip

💡 Don't make notes in the first reading. Focus on understanding the "big picture".

Phase 2: Standard Books & Optional (Months 7-12)

Once you have a hang of the NCERTs, transition to standard reference books and finalize your Optional subject.

  • Polity: M. Laxmikanth
  • Economy: Ramesh Singh or Nitin Singhania
  • Modern History: Spectrum (Rajiv Ahir)
  • Environment: Shankar IAS or PMF IAS
  • Art & Culture: Nitin Singhania

Optional Selection

Choose an optional based on your interest, academic background, and syllabus overlap. Complete at least 70% of the optional syllabus in this phase.

Phase 3: Integration & Answer Writing (Months 13-15)

Start integrating Prelims and Mains preparation. Practice answer writing daily and begin solving previous year questions (PYQs).

  • Focus on Ethics (GS IV) and Internal Security.
  • Join a Mains Test Series for disciplined practice.

Phase 4: Prelims Exclusive Focus (Final 3 Months)

Shift your entire focus to Prelims.

  • Solve at least 50 Mock Tests.
  • Revise Current Affairs of the last 1.5 years.
  • Master the CSAT (Paper II) - do not take it lightly!

Conclusion

Success in UPSC is a marathon, not a sprint. Consistency is your greatest weapon. Stay focused, stay disciplined, and keep the fire burning for UPSC 2026.
